SHORE TEMPLE
Mahabalipuram or Mamallapuram an ancient port city in Chengalpattu district of Tamil Nadu. Once upon a time it was rushing seaport and trading centre. It is also called as Group of monuments .
Rushing beach ,still ancient temples are not only the elements that complete Mahabalipuram in a historical way , there are some great rock cut monuments , cave monuments , sculptures which throw light into its history and give a glimpse of a typical historical site.
It has become a major tourist attraction in past few years. Heading around 56 kilometres from Chennai. Mahabalipuram was built by one of the Pallava king Narsimhavarman in 7 th century . It is one of oldest cities in India. It is a town on a strip of land.
Mamallpuram is its ancient name which got its name from the significance of its king Narsimhvaraman he was a great wrestler and fighter of his kingdom and that time .He was called "Mamallan" meaning Great wrestler and the town got its name as Mamallapuram.
SHORE TEMPLE
Built in 7th BC it is one of those three temples built in such a way the first rays of the sun rays fall on main east facing fluted lingam(SHIVA-LINGA).. It was down beneath the sand but the tsunami led to the exposure of many rock cut temples,inscriptions ,sculptures .
Later ,archaeologists found out an underwater site 700m east of the temple where sculptures,blocks of rectangular stones were found .
